Interview Preparation

Interview preparation and practice designed for newcomers begins with the typical structure—role playing as interviewer and interviewee to develop comfort in asking and answering questions and getting feedback on responses—and then goes further. Additional topics could include learning and practicing workplace terminology and jargon, discussing how U.S. workplaces may differ in culture and norms from their country of origin, and question-and-answer practice.

Say It Again, Differently

As non-English speakers work to add to their vocabulary, one challenge is rephrasing what they’ve said if the listener doesn’t seem to understand them. Offering a nonjudgmental, supportive space for English learners to practice repeating the same information using different words—that they may speak more clearly or are more locally well known—would be especially useful for job applicants.
